Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z: Setting a New Benchmark for Value

TATA Nexon ADTATA Nexon AD

The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z may be late to the 300-400cc party, but it certainly makes an entrance with its competitive pricing. What sets the NS400Z apart is its unbeatable value—it’s the most affordable 400cc motorcycle available today.

At Rs 5.64 lakh, it undercuts its competition, offering exceptional value for a single-cylinder 400cc bike. This aggressive price point makes it an option for riders looking for power and performance without breaking the bank. However, with such competitive pricing and the claim of being the most powerful Pulsar, the NS400Z now has big shoes to fill. Bajaj is positioning itself to challenge the established leaders in the 300-400cc segment, where it faces fierce rivals like the recently launched Triumph 400s, KTM 390s, and the Dominar 400.

With advanced features, a powerful engine, and modern electronics, the Pulsar NS400Z seeks to be more than just another member of the Pulsar family. But can it truly redefine its segment and rise to become a flagship model? We took it for a spin to find out.

Design

The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z adopts the iconic NS design language while bringing fresh updates to the table. At first glance, its muscular and sharp silhouette is unmistakably Pulsar, reminiscent of the NS200. It retains the bold, aggressive stance that Pulsar fans adore, but it also incorporates a range of modern updates that elevate its visual appeal.

The most striking update is the angular Z-shaped LED DRLs that surround the round LED projector headlamp, giving the NS400Z an assertive and distinctive front-end look. The larger tank extensions, which integrate with the radiator cowl, further amplify its aggressive stance.

The golden USD forks not only add a premium touch but also enhance its muscular profile. At the rear, the tail section has been redesigned to be sleeker, contributing to a more aerodynamic shape, although the exhaust design feels a bit understated for a flagship model.

The overall design language stays true to the NS lineage, maintaining its sporty DNA. Yet, for a model positioned as a flagship, the NS400Z could have pushed the envelope a bit more to truly stand out in the crowded 300-400cc segment. It is stylish and modern, but not groundbreaking enough to redefine the segment. Still, the blend of familiar design cues and modern updates makes it an attractive option for those seeking performance wrapped in a sporty package.

Features

The Pulsar NS400Z is packed with modern features designed to enhance the riding experience. It sports a fully digital color LCD instrument cluster with a secondary display for ride mode selection, traction control settings, Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, brightness adjustment, trip details, and a lap timer. It also provides vital information such as speed, gear position, fuel level, and clock.

The bike’s ride-by-wire system offers four riding modes—Rain, Road, Sport, and Off-road—adjusting throttle response and ABS intervention for varying riding conditions. Additionally, it comes with switchable traction control and ABS tailored for each mode. Bluetooth connectivity allows turn-by-turn navigation, phone notifications, and music control via a 4-way selection switch on the left handlebar. While the NS400Z covers most modern essentials, it misses out on features like distance-to-empty and average fuel consumption displays.

Performance and Handling

At the heart of the Pulsar NS400Z lies a 373cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine borrowed from the Dominar 400, delivering 39.4 bhp and 35 Nm of torque. However, being 18 kilograms lighter than the Dominar, the NS400Z benefits from an enhanced power-to-weight ratio, resulting in impressive acceleration. Its 46-teeth rear sprocket boosts initial pickup, allowing the bike to sprint from 0-60 kmph in just 2.8 seconds and 0-100 kmph in 6.9 seconds.

The engine comes alive above 4,000 rpm, showcasing a strong mid-range and robust top-end. It feels lively and responsive between 4,000 and 7,000 rpm, making city overtakes a breeze while ensuring smooth highway cruising at 100-120 kmph. The 6-speed gearbox is paired with a light slip-and-assist clutch, enhancing overall ride comfort. Although there are minor vibrations at higher revs, the engine maintains its composure, contributing to a refined riding experience.

Handling is where the NS400Z shines. Its lightweight build and agile nature make it extremely nimble, particularly in urban traffic. The perimeter frame, combined with USD front forks and a rear monoshock, delivers excellent stability and precise cornering. The slightly firm suspension effectively absorbs minor bumps, although it can feel a bit harsh over sharper obstacles.

The bike’s ergonomics are thoughtfully designed, featuring a slightly upright riding posture with a wide single-piece handlebar for long-distance comfort. Weighing just 174 kilograms, the NS400Z is incredibly easy to handle, boosting rider confidence, especially for those new to the 400cc segment. Braking duties are handled by a 320mm front disc and a 230mm rear disc, delivering adequate stopping power, though the front brake could benefit from better feedback.

Overall, the Pulsar NS400Z delivers an impressive riding experience with its spirited performance, nimble handling, and comfortable ergonomics, making it a compelling choice for enthusiasts looking for power and versatility.

Verdict

The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z makes a bold statement in the competitive 300-400cc segment with its aggressive pricing, robust performance, and feature-rich package. Positioned as the most powerful Pulsar yet and the most affordable 400cc motorcycle in Nepal, it offers unbeatable value for money.

The addition of ride-by-wire technology, multiple riding modes, and switchable traction control caters to a wide range of riding styles, enhancing its versatility. Its lightweight design and agile handling make it an enjoyable ride, whether you’re navigating city streets or cruising on the highway. However, its design doesn’t quite break new ground for a flagship model, leaving some room for improvement.

Despite this, the NS400Z manages to set a new benchmark for value in the segment. It may not disrupt the segment, but it undoubtedly offers an impressive package that will appeal to performance enthusiasts and budget-conscious riders alike.
